July 2015 – Falls Church, VA : BITS Employee of the Quarter Q2 – Natalie Spencer
BITS hired Natalie right out of college to join the team supporting the newly awarded VHA Portfolio Management contract.  Natalie excelled, learning her job as a systems analyst as well as learning about VA and her clients.  She displays a very positive “can-do” attitude.  The customer has made very positive comments about Natalie’s support.  Natalie makes a great effort in being involved in BITS corporate activities and has proven herself to be an exceptional overall employee. At the 2015 SECAF Awards we were presented with the Special Recognition Award. The Special Recognition Award is presented to a small business that – in the judges’ view – exemplifies many of the core qualities of the other SECAF awards and has a strong focus on providing services and solutions that are useful and relevant to customers.

April 2015 – Falls Church VA : BITS Employee of the Quarter Q1 – Lynn Green
Lynn Green was nominated by Kevin Darnell for providing exemplary service to in her daily job performance and demonstrating a willingness to work above and beyond.  BITS provides staff augmentation support to the James A Lovell Federal Health Care Clinic Information Technology Department, this includes a clinical information systems trainer (Lynn Green) and an asset inventory specialist (Alex Scott). January 2015 – Falls Church VA : BITS Employee of the Quarter Q4 – Julie Lorfano
Julie Lorfano has been selected Employee of the Quarter for Q4, 2014. Julie, BITS Director of Contracts, is responsible for BITS’s Contracts Department. For 2014 Julie performed the role of processing all NDA’s, TA’s Contracts and Subcontracts processing. The last two quarters of the year were particularly busy. November 2014 – Falls Church VA : Hire  John Zorich – Director of Quality
John P. Zorich has ‘re-joined’ BITS as the Director of Quality Assurance.  John will manage the corporate Quality Management System (QMS) and will lead our CMMI efforts this year.  John had been on contract to BITS, performing QA duties for the DCAA Help Desk Contract the last 18 months.  Prior to returning full time to BITS, John served as the Vice President of Business Development for VirtualAgility (now SmartC2) where he developed IT solutions for client. Ms. Collins joins the Business Information Technology Solutions (BITS) Group as IDIQ Director and will also function in a business development capacity where her focus will be building bridges between this talented SDVOSB and members of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) / VA and other Health Organizations. November 2014  : BITS – OSEHRA Open Source Electronic Health Record Alliance 
BITS joined OSEHRA, the Open Source Electronic Health Record Alliance as a contributing alliance member earlier this year.  BITS has been “engaged” to OSEHRA for over two years, with Dr. Jack Taylor serving as the Co-chair to the OSEHRA Architecture Workgroup since 2013.

One of the critical value steps of OSEHRA is to leverage the work being accomplished by Alliance members in qualifying the VistA-based EHR capabilities that are based on the VistA code to world-wide implementations of VistA that are deployed throughout the US and overseas locations. With the progress that has been accomplished by Alliance members, the need was expressed to “converge” these aspects in code, collaborating with the VA OIT and AIM leadership to provide a “single package” in Sprint-based increments over the next 12 months.

October 2014 – Falls Church, VA : Hire  Brad Triebwasser – Director, Health Information Technology
Brad Triebwasser has joined as a Director, Health Information Technology.  Brad will take over DT&T, IV&V, VA Best and Database Management projects.  Prior to joining BITS, Brad was the Program Manager for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) VistA Evolution PMO and the Operations Manager/Program Manager on the VLER Health Direct. Brad servedin a variety of capacities over the last nine years supporting the VA, and five years supporting the Defense Manpower Data Center, following 23 years of service in the United States Marine Corps. May 2014 – Alexandria VA : Veterans Affairs Scheduling – America Competes
Business Information Technology Solutions (BITS) is pleased to report our engagement through Hewlett Packard (HP) in the design, development and demonstration to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for an achievable path to realize a Veterans Administration Scheduling capability.  HP was awarded third place in the contest and donated the cash award of $495,000 to several Veteran organizations. March 2014 – Alexandria VA : Hire  Julie Lorfano – Director of Contracts
Ms. Julie Lorfano is a welcomed addition to our Contracts Department. BITS hired Julie to lead the contractual side of our business, manage our current contracts and to help us secure additional prime contract vehicles. Julie is a seasoned and experienced professional with over 25 years of experience in contract administration. Before joining BITS, Julie was the Contract Manager for SRA International, Inc., a large Government IT contractor, supporting the DoD and Civil Intelligence business practices. Prior to that Julie spent 6 years with Oracle Corporation. While there Julie supported the Federal DoD, Federal Civilian, Advanced Program Group and State/Local Practices. During her contracts career, Julie has held a number of management and staff positions, in various computer-related companies, such as Motorola and Packard Bell/NEC.  Julie holds a Masters in Government Contracting from ESI/George Washington University and Bachelors of Science degree in Mass Communications from Virginia Commonwealth University.

February 2014 – Alexandria VA : Hire  Jean Hancock – Senior Proposal Manager
Ms. Hancock will support BITS in the establishment of the BITS proposal organizations to support all corporate proposal requirements – covering everything from Request for Information to Request for Proposal.  Additionally she will be tasked to build-out the Proposal Development Center on SharePoint 2013 and establish all proposal processes. This center will standardize the BITS proposal responses and capabilities and streamline internal response procedures and guidelines. Jean has 25+ years’ experience in proposal management and desktop publishing for government and private sector clients. Before joining BITS Jean was owner/consultant of Hancock Signature Proposals, supporting local designated small-to-medium government contractors in Northern Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Prior to venturing out as a consultant she worked for L-3 Communications/LOTSD, supporting linguists and translators deployed in the Middle East. Originally from Oklahoma, attended Northeastern A&M and University of Phoenix. Lived 20 years in San Diego, then Colorado before moving east to Virginia.

October 2013 to December 2013 – BITS Employee of the Quarter – Zach McQuay
Mr. Zach McQuay has been recognized as the BITS Employee of the Quarter for his leadership and demonstrated dedication and devotion in instituting BITS’ new time and expense management system.   Having identified the limitation of our existing timecard system, Zach, on his personal initiative, began the research of available systems.  He identified viable alternatives and investigated each candidate systems’ capabilities against BITS’ current and future requirements.  Zach reached out to the vendors and collected product information, completed an analysis of alternatives and presented his recommendations to senior management for approval. Click here for more details

January 2014 – Alexandria VA: Hire Dan McCarron – VP Health IT
Mr. Dan McCarron is a welcomed addition to our Health IT vertical that has seen significant growth over the last couple of years.  BITS hired Dan to oversee the strategic direction, organic growth, planning and execution performance of the BITS Health IT vertical.  Prior to BITS, Dan had been with WBB as the VP Federal and Commercial Business Sector, he was responsible for a team that consists of client partner, program managers, and consultants that achieved profitable revenue growth and customer satisfaction through the product and services business. October 2013 – Alexandria VA: Hire – Ed Mays – DoD Account Manager
Mr. Edward Mays, Colonel, United States Marine Corps, retired, is a welcomed addition to BITS team.  Ed will be challenged to expand the BITS presence in the DoD market segment.  Ed will concentrate on sustaining our present DoD business, focus on emerging opportunities, and place an emphasis on growing new Marine Corps, Navy and Army business. May 2013:  BITS Employee of the Quarter
Sherri Lee Simons was recently chosen as BITS’ Employee of the Quarter.  She is a proven performer and leader with over 25 years of clinical, management, administrative, Information System and patient safety experience. Sherri has a Master’s Degree of Science in Nursing Administration from George Mason University and has a number of clinical certifications by both the National Certification Corporation and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.  In informatics, she is certified by the Health Level 7 (HL-7) International, the global authority on standards for interoperability of health information technology, in change management. Dedicated to exceeding customer expectations, she has been happily employed by BITS for over five years where she has supported various VHA and VBA initiatives. Sherri is currently working on business development projects and is determined to increase BITS’ business within the Federal and Private sector.

May 2013: HL-7 Co-Chair
BITS VP Dr. Mark Janczewski, Senior Physician SME and Clinical Informatician was recently nominated and elected as a co-Chair of the Health Level Seven International (HL7) Electronic Health Record (EHR) Working Group (WG). HL7 is a not-for-profit, accredited International Standards Development Organization (SDO) dedicated to providing a comprehensive framework and related standards for the exchange, integration, sharing, and retrieval of electronic health information to improve care delivery, optimize workflow, reduce ambiguity and enhance knowledge transfer among all of its stakeholders, including healthcare providers, government agencies, the vendor community, fellow SDOs and patients.  The goal of HL7 EHR WG Group is to support the HL7 mission of developing standards for EHR data, information, functionality, and interoperability, to include developing functional and information requirements for EHRs and EHR systems, Personal Health Records (PHRs) and PHR systems, and a definition of a high-level framework to support interoperability requirements and life cycles.  Dr. Janczewski is considered a leading expert in EHR functional requirements and workflows, and his election as one of only six individuals worldwide to this important co-Chair position is a testament to his tireless efforts over the past few years providing support as a key member of the HL7 EHR WG, in particular his significant contributions in the development of Release 2 of the EHR-S Functional Model, an international standard that expresses over 330 functions and 2,300 conformance criteria for EHR systems.

March 2013: OSEHRA
Dr. Jack Taylor, MD, FACS, is serving as the co-chair to the Open Source Electronic Health Record Agent (OSEHRA) Architecture Work Group (AWG). The OSEHRA AWG is “young” but productive to the VA and the open-source community’s agendas including Standardization of VistA to the “gold disk”, providing open focused briefings on major initiatives of the VA and VA-DoD including the SOA-ESB of the integrated Electronic Health Record (iEHR) and the improvements to the User Experience, BlueButton, and data management from legacy to the cloud.  The AWG meets (nearly) every Tuesday at 4pm Eastern Time and the site is easily accessed for interested parties to join at: http://www.osehra.org/group/architecture

April 2013: Illinois Nursing Conference
BITS Senior Nurse Informaticist, Sherri Lee Simons, delivered three keynote presentations at the 2013 Conference of the Illinois Section of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), held on April 25-26 at Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa in Galena, IL.  This non-profit organization’s mission is to improve and promote the health of women and newborns and to strengthen the nursing profession through the delivery of superior advocacy, research, education and clinical resources. Ms. Simons’ presentations included a variety of leadership and clinical topics, including a focus on Patient Safety.
